펭귄에 대한 부당한 처우에 관하여

펭귄이 제대로 대접받은 적은 없다.

껌종이 모델로 사용됐을 뿐.

일찍이 나는 펭귄과 친하기 위해

길에 흩어진 쿨민트 껌종이를 모으며

하왕십리에서 장충동까지 순례한 적이 있다.

다리 짧은 야구선수의 별명으로 펭귄이

조롱받는 것에 분개하기도 했다.

어느 영화에서는 지구를 파괴하려는

악당의 부하로 등장했다.

그 감독은 돌대가리다

누가 뒤뚱거리는 새를 수하에 둘 것인가.

멸종위기로 주목 받고 있으나

누구도 펭귄과 얘기한 적은 없다.

보수주의자들은 진화의 막다른 골목으로 간주하지만

펭귄은 좀체 과묵하다, 날개를 버린 이유에 관해서.

물론, 펭귄은 펭귄으로 태어나고 싶은 건 아니다

빙산의 면밀한 체온에서 생겨났을 뿐.

외로운 날, 나는 쿨한 추억을 찾아 서점에 간다

니체의 책 표지, 타원의 감옥에 갇힌 채

더 이상 귀찮게 찾지 말라는 듯

담담한 표정으로 서 있는 새를 만나러.

 On the unfair treatment of penguins

Penguins have never been treated fairly,

only exploited on a chewing gum label.

In my young years to befriend the penguins

I used to pilgrim from my home to a neighboring town,

collecting the penguin on cool mint gum wrappers.

I got angry when I learned that the penguins were alluded

to laugh at a baseball player with short legs.

In a movie the penguins acted as

underlings of a scoundrel destroying the earth.

The director is an idiot, for

who would like the tottering birds as followers.

Although considered as an endangered species

penguins were never talked to by anyone.

Conservatives regard them as the cul-de-sac of evolution,

but penguins are silent of the reason they deserted their wings.

Of course, penguins never wanted to be born penguins,

just born out of the sensitive body temperature of glaciers.

On a lonely day, I visit a bookstore seeking a cool memory,

to meet a friend incarcerated in an oval prison,

a bird standing with an indifferent look, begging,

please, don't torment me again by coming here.
