침묵수도원＊

 침묵은 귀밝은 늙은 동물,

 놀랍게도 그 굽은 등을 지반 삼아 집 짓는 사람들을 보았다

 선잠 든 침묵의 귓불을 건들지 않으려 가만가만 시간을 벽돌 쌓으며 걷는 젊은 수도사의 조심성 많은 뒷모습을 보았다

  가을겨울가을겨울 더 깊어지는 회랑이 침묵의 방벽이 되어주는 말없음의 시간을 보았다

  삼엄한 침묵의 경계(警戒)를 피해 수도원 담장을 혼자 넘어나가는 벙어리 신이 떠올랐다

  황무지 눈밭을 발자국 없이 뛰놀고 있었다

  봄잠 든 침묵의 콧등을 밟고 골짜기 숲으로 산책 나선 천진한 밝은 얼굴의 노수도사들도 있었다

  소리, 소리들을 보았다

  수도원 뒤쪽 산맥 넘어 흰눈이 걸어 내려오는 소리

  마당을 지나는 바람의 나무구두 소리

  저녁 종을 당겨 새의 길을 봉쇄하는 소리

  한 자루 촛불로 천년의 침묵과 어둠을 봉쇄하는…… 그런 소리들을

  Silence is an old animal with good ears,

  I saw some amazing people building houses on its bent back

  I saw the careful back of a young monk softly piling the bricks of time, trying not to disturb the silent earlobes in slumber

  Autumn and winter, autumn and winter, I saw the reticent time of a deepening gallery sheltering the silence in its wall

  Reminding me of the mute god hurdling over the wall of the abbey running from the watch of the wary silence

  Romping about without footprints on the snowy wasteland

  Some old monks with childish shining faces walk out to the woods in the valley stepping on the sleepy spring silence

  I saw the sound, and sound

  Of white snow walking down the mountains at the back of the abbey

  Of the wooden shoe of the wind passing through the yard

  Of the evening bell pulling to block the path of the birds

  Sounds... of a candle freezing the silence and darkness of thousand years
