고원에 바람 불다

          ―혜초의 길 1

세상은 바다

돛 올리면 집 밖은 전부 길

닻 내리면 바로 거기가 내 집인 것을

통일했다고 천하 얻은 것이 아닌데

고기맛보다 지독한 사치와 향락

목탁 두드리면 배 채울 수 있는 나라

무엇을 바라 머리 깎았단 말인가

갖고 싶은 것이 없어 바닷길 저 너머

부처의 나라에 가보기로 했다네

불법佛法 일어난 까마득한 나라로

얼마나 많은 인간과 짐승들이

여기 이 고원에서 숨거뒀을까

고원의 모래 알맹이들이여

시간의 역사를 기억하고 있느냐

인간이 나타난 이후의 시간과

이 모래들 바윗덩어리였을 때의 시간을

세 마을에 한 번은 장례식이 있고

먹을 것이 없어 우는 아이들

물 한 모금의 자비와

짚신 한 켤레의 보시

자, 또 한 끼 얻어먹었으니 길 떠나자

데칸고원과 파미르고원을 지나

북천축국을 지나 남천축국을 지나

카슈미르를 지나 건타라국을 지나

바람은 모래둔덕을 만든다

따뜻한 잠자리는 늘 집착

세상은 고통의 바다라고 했다

부처의 나라는 저 모래바람 부는

고원을 넘어가야 있나니.

Winds in the Plateau

    -The Road of Haecho 1

This world is a sea

The road begins when you put up the sail outside of your house

Where you lower the sail is your house

We cannot acquire the world even with unification

Obsession of luxury and pleasure are worse than the taste of the meat

A country where you can make a living just by knocking on the wooden block (moktak)

Why did you become a monk?

You just wanted to go to Buddha's country

Crossing over the sea

A country far away where Buddhism began

How many human beings and animals

have died in this plateau?

Sands of the plateau,

Do you remember the history of time?

The time after human beings have appeared

The time when these sands were just a block of rock

There is a funeral once every three villages

Children crying from hunger

A mercy of one drop of water

A pair of straw shoes as an almsgiving

Let’s leave now since I got my food for the day again

Passing through Deccan plateau and Pamir plateau

Passing through the northern side of India and the southern side of India

Passing Kashmir and Kantar

Winds make hill of sands

Desire for a comfy bed is an obsession

This world is a sea of agony

The country of Buddha is

across that plateau of sandstorms
