한겨울 나무마을에 간다

나무마을로 간다

키가 큰 잣, 리키타, 상수리, 느릅

그 아래 작은 집 한 채씩 짓고 사는

산뽕, 갈메, 산죽, 다릅

이 겨울 나무마을은

하나같이 독한 마음으로

머리털 깎고 선방禪房에 들어갔다

눈도 그 동네 눈은 참선을 한다

나뭇가지에 앉았다가 슬그머니

땅으로 내려와 가부좌를 튼다

깎지 못하는 머리털을 이고

나는 나무마을로 간다

비탈진 쪽으로 뿌리 버팅겨 섰던

뿌리의 등허리, 흙 밖으로 불거졌던

등 시린 나무

이 추위 어떻게 지내는지,

중심은 아직도 탄탄한지

작년 봄, 옆구리 여기저기에

링거 줄 매달고 중환자였던 고로쇠나무,

입춘은 가까워오는데 또 어쩐다?

오늘 눈이나 마음 푸근하게 쏟아져

여린 싹들도 눈이불 다 덮어주고

관자놀이에 심줄 돋은 뿌리와

못자국이 험한 고로쇠도

푹 덮어주었으면 좋겠다

선방 나무들도 동안거 해제解制하고

숲으로 뛰어나와 두 팔 벌리고

하늘이 내려주는 복을 받으며 기뻐하리라.

I Go to Tree Village in Midwinter

I go to Tree Village

The tall pine nut, acorn and elm trees

And the wild mulberry, jujube and bamboo

That live below them building a small house for each of them

This winter everyone in Tree Village

All alike with a dogged spirit

Had their hair cut and entered a Zen meditation hall

Even snow in that village meditates, and

While perching on a tree branch

Furtively comes down to earth and sits in meditation.

Carrying tussles of hair that cannot be cut short

I go to Tree Village.

The waist of roots

That stood leaning down the slope

The tree with a cold shoulder

That bulged out of the earth

I wonder how it’d be surviving this cold

Whether its center would still be solid

The old tree that was a serious patient last spring

With ringer tubes hanging down from its side.

How will it fare when the spring is in the vicinity?

I hope snow will fall to my heart’s content,

Covering the vulnerable buds in snow quilts

And sheltering the roots with pulsing temples,

The old tree being riddled with nail traces.

The trees in the Zen meditation hall end the winter retreat;

Dashing out to the wood and spreading both arms,

They will get heaven’s blessings and rejoice.
